Before you happens the release of my new BOOK,

Chasing The Mic: A Story of Self-Censorship and American Counterculture in a time when NOTHING is funny

A book sitting on top of a stool next to a microphone at an open-mic comedy night. The title of the book is Chasing The Mic.

As this is all in one way or another adapted from an existence I know, so please give me a moment as I try to separate myself from the words I am about to type….

The story inside of this book picks up from The Stateside Wanderer when a redirected flight puts the narrator inside of a 3-day weekend in NYC, the world of comedy clubs, and NYC night life.

In the first part of the book I give you a look at life in NYC as a new stand-up comic, explore the ideas of artistic imposture syndrome, free speech on stage, self-censorship, and the melting pot that is American culture, specifically giving credit to stand-up comedy as one of the purest national arts.

My time in the city soon sparks some restlessness and I decide to take my stand-up act on the road for a summer to explore the broader comedy scene. Along the way I end up in (though do not entirely write about) 21 cities and 3 countries. During this time I dive into some of the natural doubts anyone in the arts does, and experience some of the highs that make you stay.

All of this happened at a combined time which must be noted given the topics at hand. For one, I was just turning 30, and therefore had a combined memory of 7 previous cross country trips across the United States. So, it’s hard for me not to look at every city with some sort of eye of reflection from ten years before. Even if I had only spent a few hours there, as a traveler I was good at seeing a lot in a little amount of time, and most of the time my lack of responsibility allowed me to be pretty un-rushed. Along with turning 30, it was also around the summer of 2016. Which anyone who lived inside of the U.S. may remember was an interesting time politically speaking. I don’t consider myself that type of comedian, so I don’t go into the topic like that, but I was a Political Science major so it’s hard not to notice the moment happening around me once in a while. I also probably say a whole pile of other things I shouldn’t, but most people don’t read these days anyway, so it shouldn’t be a big deal.

If nothing else, after reading this you’ll have an idea of what it’s like to start out in stand-up comedy (at least my version of it) and get a glimpse of the United States of America from someone whose driven across it 7 times now.

If you give it a chance, I hope you enjoy.

Feel free to hit me up with any questions.
